Enjoy the Sunshine!

Wow, we have enjoyed a busy and exciting start to the month of May. Thank you so much to all of my fabulous parents for dedicating an entire day to going to Lansing with us last week. What a fun day! I also have to compliment all of the children for their hard work on their animal projects. Absolutely amazing! I love watching them present to the younger classes and share their expertise. I tried to really stress that when we research we use many different resources, and not just the internet.

Language Arts: We are soon finishing the AR program and will have our final AR store in a few more weeks! I hope that your child has enjoyed this and it has helped motivate them to read. We have been showing off our reading skills by performing readers’ theaters for our book buddies. This helps teach them fluency, expression, and tone. I’m so proud of how much everyone has grown.

Math: We just finished unit 9 and had a great time learning how to multiply multi-digit numbers. In unit 10 we will be measuring, graphing, and reviewing mean, median, mode.

Social Studies: We are now done with our Michigan government unit. I think our trip to Lansing helped the kids make a strong connection to the information that they learned about Michigan this year.

Science: We are learning about light and sound and will be until the end of the school year. This is one of my favorite units. We will be exploring with flashlights and prisms. We will also be looking at how light and sound travel.

Spelling: No test today, we will have it on Monday.

Thank you so much to everyone who raised money for Relay for Life. If you are interested in joining in the festivities, you can go to North Rockford Middle School next weekend (It starts Friday afternoon). Even though there is no cure for cancer, we continue to make strides through cancer research and it couldn’t be done without donations from all of you!

Upcoming dates:

Wednesday, May 15: Van Andel field trip with Mrs. Osborn’s class. We will be leaving Valley View at 9 a.m. and returning around 2. While we are there we will explore the museum and listen to a presentation about animal habitats.

Friday, May 25-Monday, May 28: No school, Memorial.

Wednesday, May 30: Field Day

Tuesday, June 5: End of the year class party. If you have any questions or want to help, please feel free to contact our wonderful room mom, Chris Ann Lilly204-0450.

Wednesday, June 6, Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8: ½ days

Friday, June 8: Last day of school!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Things to come...

I hope you are ready for a fun yet busy month of May! This week we are working on our animal reports. Just to clarify the children need to pick one activity to complete from the list I sent home. They could make a crossword, puppet, diorama, tracks, etc… The rest of the project is done here at school Due to the at home activity and everyone’s busy schedules, I am not having any other homework this week.

Other fun things coming up are camp science this Thursday (where are 5th graders teach exciting science lessons for the day), Friday at 2:30 we will do the 24 minute relay in the front of the school, and next week Wednesday we have another field trip. Have a wonderful day!!!

Welcome Back!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and well deserved Spring Break. It’s amazing to me how quickly time is going. We are starting to get closer to the end but still have so much to accomplish!

Science: We are just starting a new unit on light and sound. We will start looking at how light travels and different properties of light. Also next week Thursday and Friday we will be having an Earth Day Extravaganza! We have many different activities that the children will love!

Math: We just finished the end of unit 8 and will be moving into unit 9 next week. Expect to see more multiplication practice and the start of multiplying double digits.

Language Arts: We have just started new literature studies. I allowed the children to pick their own groups according to similar interests. We found some of our shared book sets in our room, but got a chance to explore and use the upper elementary shared book room down the hall.

The children did a wonderful job on their biographies. Our next mission is to write and publish our auto biographies.

Social Studies: Our focus all year is Michigan and we take this time to study the government and how it works. We learned the 3 branches of government and talked about how laws are passed. We also had an interesting discussion about what it would be like if we didn’t have any laws or rules.

*We have two field trips coming up in May. I will be sending home notes next week about both. The first one is Wednesday May 2nd to Lansing. The second one is Wednesday May 16th and we will be going to enhance our science program by visiting the Van Andel Museum downtown Grand Rapids. Wow, so much to look forward to!
