It's a New Year!

I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed this interesting Michigan weather that we are having. We are off to a great start in our week. We added a new friend to our class today, her name is Janessa Smith. All of the students have been very kind and helpful and I can tell Janessa is going to love it here just as much as the rest of our class.

Math: We just finished unit 5 and are currently working on unit 6. This unit we will be learning about, lines, line segments, rays, geometry, symmetry, and degrees of turns. We are also continuing multiplication and division practice. We will continue doing timed tests until the end of the year and celebrate in May with a Sundae party!

Science: We are finishing our unit on forces in motion. The children had a great time and we learned through many experiments about forces, motion, friction, inertia, and gravity.

Language Arts: We read a book called “School Stinks”, where we learned that sometimes when people are mean, they just need someone to reach out to them with kindness. We also have been developing our writing. Our latest lessons have helped us to use more voice in our writing. We have practiced putting the main characters thoughts in the story. We call it a thoughtshot. You may have heard your child say that they are learning cursive this year. That is correct! We have learned 10 lower case letters so far.

Computer Lab: We continue to practice our typing skills. We also have been doing activities to practice our math facts!

Remembering

Today I was blown away by the community support and was extremely proud to be from and teach in Rockford, Michigan.  Our entire school walked down to Pederson Funeral home and paid our respects to the family of Zachary Shanafelt.  I was impressed with how well all of the students behaved and followed directions.  What a touching and meaningful day!

Holiday Music Program

Wow, what an amazing Holiday program!  Mrs. Good helped our students prepare and get ready for a fantastic musical performance.  I love seeing the kids shine on stage and as you can see in the pictures they also love hamming it up backstage as well.  Great job everyone!

Report Cards and Conferences

This month we have many fun and exciting things going on. We have report cards, conferences, and Thanksgiving! Thank you for returning conference confirmation slips. Please let me know if you didn’t receive a slip. If your time will not work please feel free to contact me and we will change it. I look forward to seeing all of you!

Language Arts: The children are enjoying the anthology “Chicken Little”. We also have been learning different strategies for writing during our writing workshop. This week we learned about writing using our senses to create more detail and paint a picture in the readers mind.

Math: We are now in unit 4. The children are doing a tremendous amount of solving number stories, beginning division, multiplication, and exploring on the Everyday Math website.

Science: We finished up our science unit with our plant projects. What an amazing, talented and creative group of students! I love all of the unique ideas

Social Studies: We have started learning about Michigan starting with the symbols and discussing the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi Native American tribes. We have also been discussing map skills.

Computer Lab: We enjoyed making our top ten lists of to tell about ourselves just like in “Because of Winn-Dixie”. You can see them on the bulletin board in our room.
