Spring Break 2013!

It’s hard to believe that it is already time for spring break! Just a reminder, that we have no school for the rest of this week, and no school next week. We will return on Monday April 8th . It is a late start on that Monday, so we don’t begin until 10:40 a.m. I am hopeful that our weather will keep getting warmer There is also no weekly report this week since we have no spelling and it being a short week.

Math: We continue to work on our multiplication and division facts. We have finished unit 8, working with fractions and have moved on to unit 9. In unit 9 you will see us work with number stories, division with remainders, and multi-digit multiplication. If your child has any difficulty with some of our new concepts please feel free to send me a message.

Language Arts: Does your child ask several questions? That’s a good thing! I am trying to help the children think beyond the text and research things that they wonder about. It is so fun to watch them delve deeper into the many different things that we are learning about!

Next month is poetry month. I will be doing many exciting and entertaining poetry activities with the kids in April!!!

Spelling: We did not have spelling due to the short week. We did take time to talk about grammar, building vocabulary, and we played some fun spelling games. We will resume spelling as usual when we return in April.

Science: We just finished our unit about the Earth and Me. The kids had a great time learning and doing experiments. They learned how to contain an oil spill, how erosion occurs, how products are manufactured, and how natural disasters occur. Our next unit will begin after break and will be our last one of the year. We will be learning about Light and Shadows.

Dates to remember:

March 28th-April 7th: Spring Break!

April 8th: School resumes and late start. We begin at 10:40 a.m.

April 30th: Lansing Field Trip! I recently sent a note home about our field trip. It is very important that you remember that you need to arrive at 7:20 a.m. and we don’t return until 4:30 p.m. If the drop off and pick up times are difficult for you please try to work something out with someone else in our grade (All four classes will be going at the same time this year).

May 10th: 24 Minute Relay

May 17th & 18th: Rockford Relay for Life

May 24th -27th: NO SCHOOL. Memorial Day weekend

May 29th: Field Day

June 5th -7th: Half days of school. Noon dismissal

June 7th: Last day of school

Thanks and have a wonderful break!

Being Nice!

We have enjoyed another fabulous week in the third grade. I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by! I hope that your child has had a chance to come home and brag about receiving “caught being nice” coupons. Valley View is trying to promote positive behavior by acknowledging kids when they are caught doing something nice. The children seem to be responding very well to this and absolutely LOVE being recognized! This goes right along with the assembly that we had last week called, “Be Nice”. Many of the kids were very inspired and if you would like to purchase any Be Nice merchandise please check the order form sent home this week. If you didn’t get one let me know and I’ll send you another one.

Math: We continue to work on our multiplication and division facts. I am really starting to see many kids really start to better understand the concept of multiplication and division. We not only do the timed tests but also use manipulatives, and draw pictures. We learned about using parentheses for multi-step problems and that when you see parentheses, you know where to start the problem. I think algebra will be a breeze for some of these smarties

Language Arts: We are in full swing of letter writing. The month of February we have the Valley View post office run by the second graders. We write letters to anyone in the school and it gets delivered to each room. If you would like to write your child a letter, but want them to get it in the mail, you can send it in with them and tell them to put it in the mailbox or you can put it in if you’re in the building sometime. Who doesn’t love to get a nice letter?

We are also starting our inquiry circles. We are taking information that we wonder about and question and delving deeper to find out things that interest us. This is so exciting to watch how passionate the children are about learning new things and also they really comprehend and understand when they have a strong interest like this.

Spelling: This week we are studying words for group #1 with ee, ea, and open-e. Group #2 is studying words with vowel ,consonant, consonant, vowel, and doubling. Next week we will not have a spelling test due to our short week.

Science: We are just starting our new unit called Earth and Me. If you have any cool rocks, please feel free to send them in and we will share!

Social Studies: We are learning the geography of Michigan. The next fun activity is creating our own maps of Michigan.

Dates to remember:

February 14th: Valentine party.

February 15th: Book Orders due.

February 18th & 19th: Mid-Winter break. No school!

March 6-7: Parent Teacher conferences.

March 8th: No school.

March 15th: Valley View Carnival.

March 28th-April 7th: Spring Break!

April 8th: School resumes and late start. We begin at 10:40 a.m.

April 30th: Lansing Field Trip! I will have more information coming as I receive it. Just a heads up that we will have to leave early (usually 7:30), and we won’t make it back until after school. This is a great day to carpool with a friend if you can’t make the drop off and pick up times. Or better yet, a great day to come as a chaperone! There is no limit to how many chaperones can come, so the more the merrier I am sending home Michigan t-shirt orders today. The shirts are not required but are nice to have on the children to quickly spot our group.

Thanks and have a wonderful week!

It's a New Year!

I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed this interesting Michigan weather that we are having. We are off to a great start in our week. We added a new friend to our class today, her name is Janessa Smith. All of the students have been very kind and helpful and I can tell Janessa is going to love it here just as much as the rest of our class.

Math: We just finished unit 5 and are currently working on unit 6. This unit we will be learning about, lines, line segments, rays, geometry, symmetry, and degrees of turns. We are also continuing multiplication and division practice. We will continue doing timed tests until the end of the year and celebrate in May with a Sundae party!

Science: We are finishing our unit on forces in motion. The children had a great time and we learned through many experiments about forces, motion, friction, inertia, and gravity.

Language Arts: We read a book called “School Stinks”, where we learned that sometimes when people are mean, they just need someone to reach out to them with kindness. We also have been developing our writing. Our latest lessons have helped us to use more voice in our writing. We have practiced putting the main characters thoughts in the story. We call it a thoughtshot. You may have heard your child say that they are learning cursive this year. That is correct! We have learned 10 lower case letters so far.

Computer Lab: We continue to practice our typing skills. We also have been doing activities to practice our math facts!

January 29th: Early dismissal. Students are excused at 1:30.
