Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Math:  We just finished unit 5 and are starting unit 6.  This unit we will be learning about, lines, line segments, rays, geometry, symmetry, and degrees of turns.  We are also continuing multiplication and division practice.  We will continue doing timed tests until the end of the year and celebrate in May with a Sundae party!

Science:  We are finishing our unit on forces in motion.  The children had a great time and we learned through many experiments about forces, motion, friction, inertia, and gravity.

Language Arts:  We are working on opinion writing.  It’s fun to hear the different ideas and thoughts that the children have.  This also is helpful in reminding the children that we are all different with different ideas and opinions, and that’s a good thing!  We discussed that it’s important to listen to all sides of things to understand others.  This tied in well with learning about Martin Luther King Jr. today.  We read a book about his speech and read informational books about him.

Dates to remember:

January 23rd:  Sledding science fun @ 1-1:45 p.m.  Feel free to drop off a sled this week.  If you don’t have one, the kids can share.

January 27th:  Late Start.  School begins at 10:35 a.m.

February 13th:  Valentine party @ 2:30 p.m.

February 16th-17th:  Mid-Winter break.

*I am sending home a note about field trips today.  The first one isn’t until April, but I wanted to give you a heads up.

Thanks and have a wonderful week!

Hard to Believe it's December Already!

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving last week!  We had a small celebration on Tuesday for our fabulous student teacher Mrs. Burger.  She did an amazing job with the children and we will miss her tremendously!

Language Arts:  We are finishing our narrative writing this week and moving on to persuasive writing next.  I always love hearing how they try to change someone’s thoughts and ideas.  For our read aloud we are currently reading “Trader’s In Time”.  It is a story about two brothers in Grand Haven that get lost in the woods and realize it is over 300 years ago!  They experience many adventures together and try to figure out how to survive but also how to try to make it back to their family.

Math:  We are finished with unit 4 and moving into unit 5 next which includes practice with place value, creating pictographs, practice with perimeters, and decimals.  We also start every math lesson with practicing our multiplication math facts.  The children are working very hard and I see them all improving every day!  Over the break I sent home a small packet of math practice.  This is optional work and is not required but I know many of you asked for extra practice pages at home.

Social Studies:  We are continuing to learn about the geography of Michigan.  Soon we will be making salt dough maps! J

We are back to our normal routine but have many fun and exciting things coming in the month of December.
