Bring on February!

It’s amazes me how quickly time is going. We have had a fun and exciting start to 2010!
Language Arts: We have been working on adding more details and examples in our writing. You may hear your child say that they are zooming in on details and writing a seed story. During small group instruction and read aloud, we are reviewing and practicing the use of our comprehension strategies. We have done writing on post-it notes, rereading, questioning, and book discussion.
Social Studies: We continue learning many new things about Michigan. I can’t believe the amazing history that surrounds us. We have recently completed our research on Michigan and we completed posters about Michigan.
Math: We have been learning about segments, rays, and lines. We are also learning about angles and relating turns going clockwise and counter-clockwise. The children are doing very well with this. They are also doing a great job on their multiplication timed tests. Keep doing what your doing!
Science: We just finished our unit on the earth and are moving on to a unit about light and shadows. Mrs. Len is also tying this into her art lessons!

Another Day in Paradise...

I hope that you are all enjoying our cold and snowy weather. We started our week talking about how to be more positive and “fill a bucket”. If you heard your child come home and say something or do something nice, it was because they were trying to make your day or as we call it...“fill your bucket”.

Language Arts: Our main focus has been about getting our thoughts down in our first draft and then going back and checking our work. We practiced revising short paragraphs to make them more interesting to the reader. I’m trying to stress that even though writing may be done correctly, it is crucial to go back and revise to make it your BEST writing. Editing and revision can be difficult, but is something that the children will continue to work on. We have also enjoyed working in groups and doing book studies. This is so exciting to watch the children read a book together, have discussion and do a culminating activity. What creative children!

Math: We are towards the end of unit 5. We are just learning about decimals and fractions. This is new and can be difficult at first. We will continue having practice with decimals and fractions since it is a new concept. One tip that I give the children is to think of the decimals like money. We also continue to review our multiplication facts and have been taking timed tests.

Social Studies: We have been learning about Michigan and about it’s history. We will learn many interesting and fun facts about Michigan throughout the year. We are working on Michigan posters that should soon be ready for the hall!

Science: Next week we will be taking our test on our unit Earth and Me. We just finished our last experiment yesterday where we made an earthquake. We talked about how the land changes from earthquakes and how devastating it must be in Haiti right now.

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone had a happy and healthy holiday home with their families. It was so great to come back and hear about all of the exciting things that everyone did over the break.
Math: The children are loving the multiplication timed tests. I will be writing what test they are working on each week if you would like to help them practice facts at home.
Language Arts: We have just started a story in our anthologies about Chinese New year called, “ Chin Chiang and the Dragon’s Dance”. We have been working on creating good leads to stories. We discussed how important it is becuase it helps grab the attention of the reader.
Science: We are talking about the earth’s materials and how important it is to take care of our earth. We are also learning about renewable and non-renewable resources.
Computer Lab: The children had a fun time typing at
eduplace.com/tales/
The kids love making up funny stories and they have to remember what a noun, verb, and adjective is.
