One week to go!

We’ve enjoyed another wonderful week here at Valley View.  We look forward to finishing our MEAP testing on Tuesday.  I am so proud of how hard the children are working and I can tell they are doing their best!  They still have NO HOMEWORK until Monday, October 21st !!! I appreciate all of the snack donations.  Thanks in advance for your generosity!  Remember to get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast.  I also am very proud of the many students that are doing the electronic detox.  Way to go!

Language Arts:  We continue working hard to improve our writing.  We are learning how to start with good leads to hook the reader.  We also are working on how to write true stories.  I look forward to celebrating some of our writing soon!  We have also been reading the book “Because of Winn Dixie”.  A great story about a girl who finds a dog that helps her make new friends in a new town.

Math:  We have finished unit one and moved into unit two.  Concepts that we have been learning about are frames and arrows, practicing addition and subtraction, following rules for in and out tables, and more math games.

Science:  The kids have enjoyed learning about living things.  We have looked at plants, flowers, crayfish, and other animals.  We were fortunate enough to have Mr. Walda visit us last week.  He is a retired science teacher who loves coming in to share his expertise.  He did an awesome lab of living things in the sea.  What an awesome extension of what we are learning!

Our First Full Week!

What a wonderful first week and two days of school!  I have had a great time getting to know your children and many of you.  It was nice seeing so many of you at our curriculum night.  I look forward to a fantastic year!

Today your child will bring home a weekly report.  Please look it over, sign and return.  This is meant to help inform you of your child’s weekly behavior and academic progress.  I hope that you find this helpful.

Math:

We have already started unit 1 in math.  We are reviewing subtraction, number grids, finding numbers around us, telling time and place value.  Next week we will be working on graphing, and name collection boxes. Our online math should be set up by next week.  I will send home passwords with the kids when it’s ready to go.J

Language Arts:

We discussed several read alouds that involve the theme of friends, and really looking at important qualities that we believe good friends possess.  We started notebooks, which we do every morning when we arrive.  The children have many fun and interesting things to write about, I love reading their stories!

Computer Lab:

We started computer lab and have done some testing.  I know the kids look forward to starting our keyboarding skills soon!

Spelling:

Next week the kids will take a pre-test, and spelling tests will begin the following week.

I am in need of one more room parent.  If you are interested, please let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you ahead of time for your consideration!

Important Information!

Dear Parents:

We have been informed by the City of Rockford that a no water contact order has been issued due to levels of E-coli found in the City water.  The contamination was caused by an equipment malfunction at the City’s water treatment plant.

Based on the recommendation of the Kent County Health Department, and because the health and safety of your children is our priority, the following schools/programs will be closed on Thursday, September 5:

CLOSED

Meadow Ridge Elementary

Parkside Elementary

Valley View Elementary

North Rockford Middle School

River Valley Academy

Child Care (Administration Building)

ALL OTHER SCHOOLS ARE IN SESSION

AND TRANSPORTATION ROUTES WILL RUN AS NORMAL

If the City of Rockford is able to resolve this issue, we will plan on all schools being in session on Friday, but I will keep you informed if this changes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Shibler, Superintendent

Rockford Public Schools

Welcome back!

Welcome to Third Grade!  My name is Mrs. Matlosz and I am going to be your teacher this year. I hope that you have had a fun and exciting summer.  I had an amazing summer with my kids.  I have Ava who is 5 1/2 and Jack is 8.  We’ve had an awesome time hanging out at our cottage, going to Michigan’s Adventure, and we loved camping in the Upper Peninsula.  Even though I’ve had a great summer, I can’t wait to get the year started and meet all of you.  I hope to see you Wednesday, August 28, 2013 for our curriculum night.

6:30 P.M. – New VV Family Meeting in Media Center
7:00 – 8 – ALL SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE!  *feel free to drop off supplies at any time.

Now for your first assignment:  to introduce yourself to me and your classmates, please bring a postcard or photo to school showing one of your summer adventures around the state of Michigan. Your postcard could be about almost anything you have done this summer…a trip to visit friends or relatives, playing with friends, a vacation, camping, relaxing at the beach or at home, etc. We will be sharing your postcard with the class and making a bulletin board with them. Thank you in advance for remembering to bring this on Tuesday.

Each third grader will have a desk this school year. The desks allow you to be responsible for your own “space”, but are quite small.  Please bring school supplies such as pencils, crayons, glue stick, folders, and scissors; please leave trapper keepers, rolling back packs, toys, and games at home.  Thank you very much for your cooperation in this area.  Also, in third grade, you will probably be hungry before our lunchtime.  I know that I usually am!  You are encouraged to bring a healthy snack (no candy please) with you to eat in the morning.
I am looking forward to meeting you.  Third grade is going to be AWESOME!

Due to the fact that we have so many things going on, I will try to just send a weekly message about things to come for the week so that it doesn’t seem too overwhelming. May is a very busy month!

A Beautiful Day at the Capital!

I can't thank everyone enough for helping make another successful fun year in Lansing.  What an incredible day!  I tried to get pictures of everyone, but a few friends were doing their best to avoid the camera.  I'll have to snap a few shots at school when they don't know I'm there:)
