Remembering

Today I was blown away by the community support and was extremely proud to be from and teach in Rockford, Michigan.  Our entire school walked down to Pederson Funeral home and paid our respects to the family of Zachary Shanafelt.  I was impressed with how well all of the students behaved and followed directions.  What a touching and meaningful day!

Holiday Music Program

Wow, what an amazing Holiday program!  Mrs. Good helped our students prepare and get ready for a fantastic musical performance.  I love seeing the kids shine on stage and as you can see in the pictures they also love hamming it up backstage as well.  Great job everyone!

Happy October

I hope everyone had a great weekend! There is so much happening here in third grade and we’re loving it! We have been busy taking our MEAP tests and have one more day to go. We will be taking the math portion of the MEAP on Tuesday and then we will be done! I hope your child has enjoyed having no homework during the weeks of testing. We will start back into our usual routine next week. I know the kids are looking forward to our Halloween festivities. A huge thank you to our room mom, Mrs. Klein for planning our party. If you didn’t see a note about the party, please let me know.

Language Arts: The children are continuing daily with read to self, read with someone, and small reading groups designed to provide specific interventions for each child. The kids have also gotten to do Versa Tiles in small groups with some of our parent volunteers. We will soon be doing literature circles incorporating non-fiction. During our writing time we have been talking about different ways to write stories to add more detail. We brainstormed lists, drew sketches, made webs, and worked on creating very detailed sentences starting from what we call a “blah sentence”.

Math: We continue to review many concepts but are building on previous things that the children have learned. Everyday Math likes to explore several different ways to find answers and encourages kids to choose the one that works best for them

Social Studies: We will begin learning about the history of Michigan and creating some crafts to go along with what we are studying. We learn about the first settlers, Native Americans, fur trading, mining, farming, etc…

Working Hard!

We have enjoyed another fun and exciting week here in third grade. We ended the week meeting with our book buddies from Mrs. Fowle’s second grade class and our book buddies in Mrs. Auzin’s Kindergarten class.

Did I mention it’s almost October? It’s hard to believe that fall is here. Time flies when you’re having fun!

Language Arts: We have read aloud many books, including some of my favorites such as…”Skippy Jon Jones”, “We had a Picnic this Sunday Past”, “Do Unto Otters”, “Molly Lou Melon”, and many more. We have mostly focused on books that remind us of friendship and also using manners. We also take time to read and discuss our Weekly Readers.

Spelling: This was our first week doing a real spelling test. The children all did a marvelous job! Look for new words to come home on Monday. If for any reason, your child forgets their words, remember they are always on the blog!

Math: We are still doing many review activities in our math program. We have done number boxes, pictographs, calculator review, place value, and more addition and subtraction.

Technology: The children have been extremely busy taking new computerized testing. Wednesday we took a reading test and today the children did a math test. When I asked if they liked it they said it was kind of fun, but exhausting. We are doing this testing to help guide our teaching and also get our children ready for the future of standardized testing since it will be using technology.

Science: I’m sure your child has already told you that we have some crayfish that have joined our room for our living things unit. We have been looking at plants and now will be learning all about animals. We have a terrarium full of plants and will be adding worms next week to watch them work under the soil. Science is so fun and exciting!

You will soon receive a letter telling you about the upcoming MEAP testing. I just want to stress that if you need to pull your child out for any appointments to try to do it at another time. Our MEAP testing dates are Tuesday, October 9th, Wednesday, October 10th, Tuesday, October 16th.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, comments, or concerns.

Have a fabulous weekend!
