Lansing Reminder!!!

This is just a reminder that our trip to Lansing is next week, Wednesday, March 3rd. It is very important that students arrive at school by 7:20 a.m. The busses will be leaving at 7:30 a.m. Anyone carpooling should also plan to be at school at 7:20 a.m. as well. Maps and agendas will be passed out at that time. We will be returning to Valley View sometime between 3:45-4 p.m. Please be at school to pick up your child at this time. If someone else will be picking your child up, please send a note.

Your child needs to bring a disposable sack lunch. For the bus ride, students may bring a hand-held video game or CD player with headphones. No DVD player’s please! It is too difficult for us to monitor the types of movies each student is watching. A book would be a great thing to bring along on the bus! Your child is responsible for anything he/she brings along on the trip!!! We are encouraging students to bring their backpacks to hold their lunches and all of their other “gear”.

While in Lansing we will have time to stop at the gift shop in the Historical Museum. Money for the gift shop is the responsibility of the student. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting day! In the event of an emergency while we are gone please feel free to contact the office and they will contact us immediately. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call, e-mail, or send a note. Thanks!

I hope that everyone had a great Valentine’s Day, a wonderful President’s Day, and I hope you’re all looking forward to mid-winter break this week! It’s amazing how quickly this month is flying bye! A million thanks to everyone that helped plan, organize, donate, and participate in our Valentine’s party. It was absolutely spectacular! A huge thanks to Kristy Stites and Laura Bargwell!!!!

Language Arts: We read a new story in our anthologies called “City Mouse and Country Mouse”. We discussed differences and similarities. We also have focused on organization and voice in our writing. I have been showing them examples of writing with and without. We then look at the writing rubric and discuss how we would score certain writing. This has helped the children tremendously with revising their own writing and has made them grow as peer editors.

Math: We are just finishing unit 6. We will be learning more about multiplication, division, working with parentheses, estimating costs, and extended facts. We are also taking the district mid-year assessment which I will be sharing with you at conferences in March.

Spelling: We will resume spelling tests next Friday...enjoy a week off! The kids are doing grammar work and reviewing words from the previous chapters.

Science: We continue looking at light and our shadows. The children looked at what light does to our pupils, how light travels, and what does light pass through, reflect from , and get absorbed by? I love their excitement and enthusiasm. We have many budding scientists this year!

Social Studies: Thanks again for the cardboard. We will hopefully finish our salt relief maps of Michigan this week!
